The Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) has marked the successful introduction of the Bhomra e-Port Management System, heralding simpler, state of the art, harmonised trade processes countrywide.
The Government regards the new system as a crucial advance towards fulfilling the country’s trade facilitation aims and achieving the broader objective of a ‘Smart Bangladesh.’ Digitalising port procedures enhances efficiency, reduces delays, and promotes seamless trade, with measurable benefits for both the government and businesses.
This initiative involved BLPA, the Ministry of Shipping, the private sector, and the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation, through its implementing partner, Swisscontact.
The landmark inauguration ceremony on July 4, 2024, included a live demonstration of the e-Port system, showcasing its capacity to improve operations by replacing paper-based processes. Signifying successful completion of the project, BPLA symbolically accepted full control, recognising the beginning of the new era for the country’s trading environment.
In his keynote address, the Chief Guest, the Honourable State Minister of Shipping, Mr Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP emphasised the importance of trade in achieving economic objectives.
“The digitalisation of Bhomra Land Port aligns with our vision to build a ‘Smart Bangladesh’ by 2041, marking a significant step towards accelerating economic growth and enhancing regional commerce,” he told the gathering, which included including Mr Ashrafuzzaman Ashu, MP, Mr Benjamin Lang, Director of Global Programmes at Swisscontact Global, and Mr Mujibul Hasan, Country Director of Swisscontact Bangladesh.
The Minister highlighted the strategic significance of Bhomra Land Port as a gateway to India and the wider region. The project, he said, created a sustainable, adaptable template for other land ports throughout the country.
Echoing these remarks, Mr Lang said successful implementation marked the beginning of a transformative
journey towards a more prosperous future for everyone in Bangladesh.
“The digitalisation of border procedures at Bhomra Land Port highlights our commitment to enhancing trade efficiencies and to fostering inclusive growth,” he said.
Acknowledging the collaborative role played by public and private sector stakeholders, Mr Hasan said: “This initiative not only promises enhanced efficiency and security but also sets a precedent for future advancements in land port management across the country.”
